Photography Tips for Your Next Instagram Upload

It’s no secret that Instagram is a great platform for creating and sharing content with your followers. But although it might not seem it, creating awesome content is often harder and more involved than you think! For the cream of the crop insty accounts, there’s a lot more to it than just pointing and snapping to get the perfect #shot.

Our part time marketing intern and full time awesome photo guru over at www.acceology.co.vu, Astrid has outlined out her favourite photography tips to implement for your next Instagram snap below!

Take it away, Astrid…

1. Shoot outside of the Instagram app

Shooting with the Instagram app might seem easier, but really it’s not. Taking the photos directly from your phones camera gives you more control. Plus, you can take as many photos as you want. By taking more than one photo, you can play around with different angles and position, and then pick the best one, not just the first one you take. Make sure you utilise the features of your phone camera, such as tap to focus and the grid feature to ensure you capture share and aligned images.

2. Use natural light and white space

Lighting is arguably the most important part of photography; it can make or break a photo. Wherever possible, shoot your Instagram snaps in natural light. Moreover, white space helps keep your Instagram clutter free and is useful when drawing attention towards specific objects or products.

3. Pay attention to composition (and use props!)

Think about the composition of your image. It doesn’t always need to be perfectly symmetrical, so play around with the position of your subject. Whether it’s a flatlay or a portrait you’re shooting, it’s important to utilise props. They help to create interest around your subject, and put the image into context for your viewer. Try experimenting with different objects and how they help to get your message across. Props will help to bring a photo alive and portray a story.

4. Test out some editing apps

There are so many photo-editing apps out there that let you modify your photos to get the look and feel that you want. Whether you want filters or to simply adjust the brightness a little, there’s an app out there that’ll help you. Some of our personal favourites are Afterlight, VSCO Cam and Snapseed. You can get much more customisation than you would with the Instagram app and its filters. But remember; keep it simple and subtle to keep your images looking natural.

These photography tips should help you get the perfect photo for not only your next Instagram upload, but others that follow. However, if you’re looking for some top influencers to help get the perfect shot out there, send us an email at hello@theexposure.co.
